Questions to ask dance instructors before you book them

Your first dance is your once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to create an epic memory with your beloved.

It’s that unrepeatable chance to dazzle (and surprise!) your family and friends with an amazing dance routine.

No matter who you choose to partner with in creating your dance, we want to make sure you’ll have the experience worthy of your monumental day.

Here’s a list of questions to ask dance instructors before you book them:

  • How comfortable are you working with total non-dancers? How do you help absolute beginners master the basics of dancing together?

  • Will you be creating completely custom choreography for us?

  • Will we have the studio privately all to ourselves during our sessions, or will there be other lessons going on simultaneously?

  • Are you focused on one style of dance primarily? How do you decide what kind of dance to teach us?

  • Do you come up with the choreography in the moment while working with us? Or do you do it in advance? (Beware if they don’t create it while in session with you: it may not be brand new, and certainly won’t be customized to your preferences and abilities.)

  • What if we’re not comfortable or happy with the choreography?

  • Tell us about your experience teaching dance and creating choreography. How long have you been working with engaged couples on their wedding dances?

  • How many first dances have you choreographed?

  • Are you a member of any professional organizations such as WIPA (Wedding International Professionals Association)?

  • Can you help us find a song if we don’t know what we’d like?

  • Do you provide a professionally edited music track for us to use?

  • Do you provide reference videos we can take home with us to practice to?

  • Will you coach us in the mindset work we’ll need to not be scared to dance in front of all our guests?

  • Do you provide us with a customized plan and coaching around our wedding day-of details that will affect our first dance?

  • Will you communicate with our other vendors involved in the success of the dance?

  • What methods will you use to communicate with us? How do we receive session information?

It may seem like a lot, but we know from our years of experience guiding hundreds of couples that these things can make or break the success of your dance.

Remember, this is your once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to create an epic memory with your beloved. You don’t want to miss out on the chance to absolutely nail it during your spotlight moment!

Our guests loved our dance almost as much as my hubby & I loved dancing it. Thank you, Erin, for making us feel like we knew how to dance this is a memory we will cherish forever. —Pilar P.
